Alcoholism is a chronic disease characterized by uncontrolled drinking and preoccupation with alcohol. It is inability to control drinking due to both a physical and emotional dependence on alcohol.
Symptoms included repeated alcohol consumption despite related legal and health issues. Those with alcoholism may begin each day with a drink, feel guilty about their drinking and have the desire to cut down on the amount of drinking.
A mild disorder can also escalate and lead to serious problems, so early treatment is important .
Medication and alcohol interactions. Some medications interact with alcohol, increasing its toxic effects. Drinking while taking medications can either increase or decrease their effectiveness or make them dangerous.
