Codependent relationship involving an addict and a family member can be seen when a parent permits their addictive son or daughter to reside at home without facing responsibility or consequences, as the addiction escalates and the addict’s life becomes unmanageable due to the addiction. Some parents believe they are providing essential care and acting in the best interests of their struggling loved one.
Reasons for Codependency
* By offering a comfortable living environment, they believe they are helping. However, this approach can create a situation where the addict is not held responsible, allowing the addiction to stay at is and leads to de-motivation to quit or improve their situation.
* Codependent relationship is generally unhealthy, often associated with addiction and substance use disorders.
* Codependency is marked by excessive dependence on one partner, with emotion being heavily influenced by the other person’s feelings

* Codependency occurs when an addict’s behavior controls an individual who seeks approval and love from their partner, often becoming the caretaker.
* The person believes they are helping the addict but it ultimately hindered from addressing the addiction use disorder.
Signs of codependency in a relationship with an addict include:
1. Routine scarifies made by one partner
2. Feeling responsible for the addiction
3. Excessive attachment to the relationship
4. Denial of unhealthy behaviours
5. Presence of depression, guilt or shame
